Pediatric Emergency Medicine
With about 100,000 patient visits a year, we have extensive experience in the diagnosis and treatment of all types of emergencies in infants, children, teens and young adults. We're familiar with the vast differences in children's anatomy, injuries and illnesses, and are able to provide treatment that meets their unique medical needs.

Akron Children's experienced team of pediatric board-certified doctors, nurses, technicians and child life specialists have special training and knowledge in pediatric emergency medicine. We understand children have different muscular, skeletal, vascular and neurological systems from adults, and they're at higher risk for head injuries and blood loss.
If your child or teen is experiencing a mental health crisis, our Akron ER offers behavioral health emergency services with staff trained to evaluate and treat children and teens who present with mental and behavioral problems. The unit includes five rooms with muted colors and safety features designed to create a calming environment that can minimize anxiety and aggression.
To provide a safe, secure environment for our patients, visitors and staff, we screen all patients, families and visitors entering our Akron and Beeghly campus emergency departments.
- A public safety officer will inspect all bags and ask visitors to pass through a metal detector to check for weapons, illegal drugs and other dangerous items.
- Patients needing immediate attention will be assisted by ED staff and screened with a hand-held device once the patient is stabilized in an exam room.
- Patients arriving by ambulance will be screened by a hand-held device once they are stabilized in an exam room. Visitors arriving by ambulance may be screened by hand-held device or asked to walk through the metal detector.
Legally possessed items not permitted to enter the ER may be stored in the owner’s vehicle or secured by the Public Safety officer in a locker during the visitor’s stay. We appreciate your patience and cooperation in helping us ensure everyone’s safety at the hospital.

Words of Thanks…
“Took my infant to their Emergency department and we were triaged and seen by both the nurses and doctor very efficiently. Thorough security check at the door made us feel safe and everyone that we interacted with was wonderful. Will definitely be coming here for any emergencies in the future.”

“My grandson had to go to the ER. I saw all the bad reviews, and this was not our experience. From the start to finish everyone was so kind and treated my grandson so gentle. They explained everything that they were going to do. He was scared and not feeling good. Renee, his nurse, was phenomenal. She needs to be recognized for the amazing care she gave. Also, Dr. Scott and resident Anu were amazing. We thank you so much for everything. Dr. Scott even got ahold of my daughter the next day to check on my grandson. I am so impressed with everyone we encountered. Thank you from our whole family”

“My grandson was seen in the ER by highly competent professionals. He was diagnosed, admitted, and had surgery within hours. I would rate every aspect of the care in this facility as 5 star. Excellent physicians and nurses. Facility was immaculate. Food and volunteer services were also very good. I would highly recommend this facility to anyone needing pediatric care in the area. Mahoning Valley is fortunate to have such excellent care readily available!”

“Last night at about 9pm we came in for my daughter. My daughter is a difficult patient. This time however your triage nurse was awesome and set the mood for her! For the first time she was able to get all her stats including BP which we have never had done before. I wish I would have gotten her name. Hands down the best triage nurse I have ever had!! My daughter actually allowed the doctor touch her and was comfortable enough to actually play and not completely freak out.”
